The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety put an effort with researchers at the University of Utah to calculate the visual and mental command of completing a task in 30 diverse 2017 model-year vehicles, in addition to how much time it took. Members were asked to make a call, send a text message, tune the radio, or program the\u00a0navigation system using voice commands, touchscreens, and additional input methods, all while driving.<\/p>\n

Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds makes two times the risk of a crash was said by the previous research , AAA found that moving to a new target into the navigation system\u00a0could take drivers more than 40 seconds. At 25 mph, that\u2019s adequate time for a driver to take a trip through the length of four football fields, a lengthy distance to be sidetracked from the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome in-vehicle technology can create unsafe situations for drivers on the road by increasing the time they spend with their eyes and attention off the road and hands off the wheel,\u201d said David Yang,\u00a0head of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, in a statement. \u201cWhen an in-vehicle technology is not properly designed, simple tasks for drivers can become complicated and require more effort from drivers to complete.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vehicles that were tested, none put what AAA believe about low demand on the driver, despite the fact that 11 earned a score of \u201chigh demand,\u201d and 12 scored \u201cvery high.\u201d The test did not take in vehicles from all brands.<\/p>\n

While 70 percent of buyers fancy the latest technology in their cars, only 24 percent consider it already works perfectly, as said by a public opinion survey that AAA conducted. The researchers also said that aggravation from trying to use difficult systems show the way to even more driver distraction. \u201cDrivers want technology that is safe and easy to use, but many of the features added to infotainment systems today have resulted in overly complex and sometimes frustrating user experiences for drivers,\u201d said Marshall Doney, AAA\u2019s president and CEO.<\/p>\n
