Overview

The Prius was the first mass-produced hybrid car when it initially went on sale in Japan in 1997, and it was available at all four Toyota Japan dealership chains.

Toyota presented a hybrid concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, with testing beginning a year later. On December 10, 1997, the first Prius, model NHW10, went on sale.

The NHW20 Prius was a comprehensive makeover that debuted at the April 2003 New York International Auto Show for the 2004 US model year.

It was redesigned as a small liftback, situated between the Corolla and the Camry, with redesigned mechanical and interior space that considerably increased rear-seat legroom and baggage capacity. The Prius II is more ecologically friendly than the earlier model.

Toyota revealed the redesigned Prius (2010 US model year) at the North American International Auto Show in January 2009.

Toyota included three user-selectable driving modes in the Prius as standard features.

EV mode for electric-only low-speed operation, Eco mode for optimal fuel efficiency, and Power mode for enhanced performance.

The fourth-generation Prius debuted in Las Vegas in September 2015, and it went on sale to retail consumers in Japan on December 9, 2015. The debut took place in North America in January 2016, and in Europe in February.

Prius received a makeover, including new headlights and taillights, and was introduced in Japan on December 17, 2018.

The fifth-generation Toyota Prius was introduced on November 16, 2022, with two engine options for the Japanese market announced.

It is available in four variants,

  • 1.8 liter with 2 wheels drive
  • 2.0 liter with 2-wheel drive

The first employs Toyota’s Series Parallel Hybrid System, which is available in 1.8-liter (2ZR-FXE) and 2.0-litre (M20A-FXS) models with outputs of up to 103 kW (138 horsepower; 140 PS) and 144 or 146 kW (193 or 196 hp; 196 or 199 PS).

  • 1.8 liter with all-wheel drive
  • 2.0 liter with all-wheel drive

This vehicle is also available with an all-wheel drive system, the E-Four. The second vehicle, a plug-in hybrid, combines a 2.0-liter M20A-FXS engine, an electric motor, and lithium-ion batteries to produce 164 kW. (220 hp; 223 PS).

In Europe

Deliveries will start in Europe in the first quarter of 2023, with just the plug-in hybrid option available. This generation will not be offered in Australia, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom due to the previous generation’s low sales. It will be replaced with a shorter Corolla Hatchback Hybrid.
