Overview:

On March 20, 2023, The Minister of State for Petroleum Musadik Masood announced that the Government of Pakistan will charge an additional Rs 100 for petrol. From the affluent in order to provide a petrol subsidy to low-income segments in fuel tariffs. Musadik Malik states that the govt will make petrol much more expensive for the rich and cheaper for the poor by simply using prices. That will be paid by the rich to provide subsidized petrol to the low-income segment.

Statement a day after Relief Package:

The statement by Malik Musadik comes a day after our Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced a relief package for needy persons. In which a subsidy of Rs. 50 PKR will be given to them for every liter of Petrol.

Malik Musadik further elaborated on subsidy today, while stating that PM Shahbaz Sharif has ordered the ministry to increase the subsidy of the total of Rs. 100 and the rich will be charged Rs. 100 more.

The petroleum subsidy program will implement within the next five to six months, and financing for this scheme will be accommodated through Pakistan’s tax rate that the higher-income segment would be paying. Also, Malik Musadik recalled a similar mechanism that had been applied earlier in the Gas tariffs. Under this, the bills for the poor and needy were reduced by three times as compared to the rich ones.

Press Conference:

In the Press conference, the Minister of State for petroleum emphasizes. That those who live in posh neighborhoods and drive costly cars ought to contribute fairly to the cost of goods. Pakistan’s Government will take from those who have been blessed by God. And will give it to those who are striving hard to feed their families. The same policy will be reflected in everything else as well.
