A Chinese automobile manufacturer NIO is increasing its efforts in Europe, NIO’s first battery swap station for electric cars has been officially launched in Germany. The battery swap station, located in Zusmarshausen, is a partnership between NIO and Sortimo, the operator of one of Europe’s largest and most modern charging parks.

According to Ralph Kranz, managing director of NIO Germany, NIO is the first OEM in Germany to build an operational power swap system standardized for all NIO models that enables a fully automatic battery switch in five minutes. He said the first battery swap station in Germany will undergo final testing and calibration during the coming days at NIO. The company stated, with the impending delivery of the first vehicles in Germany, NIO consumers will soon have the opportunity to personally experience the revolutionary charging solution, including completely automated battery swaps.
As battery technology improves, the company will probably simply update battery capacity by adding new modules while keeping the pack’s compatibility. The company claims that by the end of 2025, it will deploy over 4,000 such stations, including about 1,000 or so outside China, while NIO has already built over 1,000 battery-swapping stations in China.
NIO’s second-generation Power Swap Station:
The NIO’s second-generation Power Swap Station 2.0, launched in April 2021 and currently in use in China holds up to 13 battery packs, and 14 battery slots that are capable of completing up to 312 battery swaps per day and supporting automatic vehicle parking
Although battery swap stations are a special feature of NIO cars, the company has installed also over 870 destination charging stations (AC, normal charging speed) with roughly 5,470 individual stalls and over 1,000 fast charging stations with more than 5,360 individual stalls. NIO’s battery swap stations allow consumers to enjoy an exceptional charging experience without putting undue strain on the local distribution grid. He continued, this station allows NIO users maximum flexibility to switch to a different battery size at any time and thus can upgrade the vehicle as needed in the future.
