Overview:

With the economic instability and aftermath of COVID-19, many governments are implementing measures to curb spending and save money. In the country, Pakistan, the monitoring committee, is led by the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. He recently expressed “serious concerns” over the use of luxury vehicles by government officials.

Stop the use of Luxury Cars:

During the committee meeting to oversee the implementation of the austerity measure, it was revealed that the officials of government are still using SUVs such as Lexus LX 570, Toyota Land Cruiser, and sedan cars of over 1800cc.

The committee directed relevant authorities to immediately stop the use of these luxury vehicles by government officials. Also, they expressed concern about the non-return of the remaining luxury vehicles.

Use of Security Vehicles is in focus:

In the meeting, the committee also discussed the withdrawal of the use of security vehicles. And has decided to implement the decision in its letter. Furthermore, the Ministry of Justice and law was tasked with approaching the superior judiciary. To suggest the implementation of austerity measures.

To the same expenditures and time, the committee also directed the Chairman Senate. As well as Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan use teleconferences for all their meetings. The Ministry of IPC has already approached the provincial government suggesting the implementation of a similar austerity measure.

As part of the austerity measures, the new timing for office work will be from 7:30 Am to 2:30 Pm, starting from the first day of Ramadan. In accordance with the cabinet’s resolution, the decision will be carried out during the summer. Notifications about this decision will be issued accordingly.

Conclusion:

Pakistan is facing economic challenges, and the implementation of austerity measures is necessary to curb spending and save money. It is much encouraging to see the monitoring committee is taking steps to ensure that government officials are not using luxury vehicles. While the withdrawal of the use of security vehicles will be implemented later. Time and money can be saved by holding meetings by teleconference. A step forward is taking similar austerity measures in provincial governments.
