Overview
After the locally assembled cars, CBU cars prices may also increase very soon in Pakistan. The demand for CBU cars is very high in Pakistan and automakers has imported thousands of CBU demanded cars. Proposal Regarding CBU Cars Import
Government is now under the heavy burden of the import bill. The Finance Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Tarin has suggested banning the import of CBU cars in Pakistan for the next 6 to 9 months. A senior official of the Ministry of Industries and Production has notified the government that under the World Trade Organization (WTO) regime, the import of CBU units is legal and the government can’t ban the import. However, the government cannot ban the import of CBU units but they can increase the taxes on CBU cars to control the import. The Ministry of Industries and Production has sent the proposal to the government which mentioned that imposed 50% regulatory duty on imported CBU cars. The below suggestions are mentioned in the proposal:
- Duty will increase on electric vehicles over 50 kWh battery
- Hybrid vehicles of 1501cc to 1800cc
- Fuel-powered CBU units (engine displacement not mentioned)
However, there is no confirmation revealed by the government against the proposal. If the government approved the proposal CBU cars prices increase.

If the government has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Industries and Production then the CBU cars prices increase in Pakistan. Earlier automakers have introduced a new price hike after the devaluation of the Pakistani currency. Even though the contentious increase of petroleum products and cars prices didn’t stop the buying of cars in Pakistan. I think we should need to boycott expensive cars to force automakers to reduce car prices.
