Lahore and the majority of Punjab has been overcasted in a thick cloud of smog.Owing to low visibility,The Motorway and the GT Road had been closed by the respective authorities. A tweet from the Government of Punjab has proclaimed that schools will open at 9 AM and close at 2:30 PM because of smog. Several accidents have been the reason due to fast driving in areas with low visibility and approximately 25 people have died. Drivers are informed to be more cautious and watchful while driving.

Similar Situation in India

Delhi has also observed a thick cover of smog and some treacherous accidents morning as the pollution levels gets worse. As a consequence of this blanket of smog, 18 vehicles counting a bus crashed into each other, leaving many injured and one dead. The drivers seen in the video were driving too fast and they weren’t conscious of the pile-up of cars in front of them.

Tips For Driving Safely

Bearing in mind the accidents, for example the one mentioned on top , drivers need to keep some  guidelines in mind when driving during such thick smog.

  1. When driving in low visibility, one should use low beam headlights in place of high beams that holds back the vision of oncoming traffic. High beam lights can also be reflected by the particles in the air causing more harm than help for the driver.

  2. Making Use fog lights is a must. Fog lights have been proven to be efficient in low visibility. Fog lights light up the lower part of the road without reflecting the light back to the driver.

  3. Drive at a slow and rational pace throughout smog or foggy conditions which provide the other drivers sufficient time to respond and act during an emergency situation. Speeds more than 30km/h are dangerous in thick smoggy conditions.
  4. Uphold a safe distance between cars. Reducing distance among cars can cause accidents as the driver doesn’t have much time to act in response if the car next to him/her stops.

  5. Avoid changing lanes.
  6. Turn off music or electronic devices when driving. Be vigilant and very attentive while driving. Don’t use your mobile while driving under any situation. Keep your eye on the road and don’t be preoccupied by anything.

  7. Fog or cold can create the formation of moisture over the windscreens. The drivers should roll down their windows to some extent or use the car’s heater to clear the moisture from the screen.

  8. Confirm that your vehicle is in a good condition and prepared for harsh conditions. Prior to driving, ensure your electrical systems, windscreen washer, wiper, battery, engine oil, brakes, and tires.
  9. Don’t be very adventurous ,just Drive slow, and stay safe.
