H.M Shahzad, All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association Chairman, told the media that the Ministry of Commerce has determined to clear imported used cars abandoned on Karachi port on the old duty structure. Approximately 7000 vehicles are abandoned on the port, waiting to be cleared. As a consequence, causing some serious concern for the port authorities. Subsequent to the new duty and taxes planned to curtail the misuse of a variety of import procedure, importers determined to not clear their vehicles on the newly imposed change in the procedure of duty.

Mr Shahzad stated that Younus Dagha, the Commerce Secretary, has guaranteed Mr Chairman that the formerly imported cars will be taxed on the previous procedure of duty and tax payment. On the other hand, it is significant to talk about here that for now this is all rumors and there is no official Government of Pakistan statement/document regarding this particular matter. The matter is still in the courts, and it is likely that the used car dealers yet go on strike if their demands are not met.

Mr Chairman also said that All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association representatives will be meeting the Commerce Secretary in coming weeks to further talk about the future plans concerning the new import duty plus the payment structure. If the present batch of stuck vehicles at the port are let go, it might just be a one-time chance.
