Overview
Despite the ongoing automotive crisis and economic downturn, Pakistan step on into the “go green” plan. The break of fossil fuels is really a need for Pakistan and needed to increase electric vehicle development. Pakistan is counted as the most polluted country. Pakistan is aiming for an emission-free future. It is a great step to consider. The overall global automotive industry moving to emission-free vehicles for a long time.
Pakistan is planning to move smoothly with the aim of transitioning to alternative renewable energy (ARE). Its target in Pakistan is to achieve a 60% renewable energy goal and increase EV production by 30% in the next seven years.
Pakistan’s Electric Vehicles Plan
Under the leadership of the Federal Minister of Energy Khurram Dastgir, a delegation attended the Future Energy Asia Conference 2023, organized by USAID in Bangkok. The agenda of this conference is “Emerging Clean Energy Investment Opportunities in Pakistan”.
The delegation conciliates Division Additional Secretary Amjad Majeed Khan, Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) Managing Director Shah Jahan Mirza, and Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) Director Syed Aqeel Hussain Jaffri.
Minister of Energy highlighted Pakistan’s National Electricity Policy 2021 objectives for Pakistan’s clean energy transition which include a 30% ratio of electric vehicles by 2030, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He also told the progress that Pakistan’s clean energy program had successfully crossed 6% with an installed capacity of 2,436 capacity.
Current Automotive Situation
The current automotive situation is very disgusting. The sale of vehicles hugely declined and was affected by several economic factors. The ongoing import restrictions on imported parts have made it difficult for manufacturers to continue a smooth production system. Meanwhile, the previous plans of automakers to move on EVs also disturb.
Electric vehicles become a big challenge for them because auto parts import is not as easy as in the past. They are unable to meet the objectives decided in the past related to EVs and the growth of the automotive sector.
The ongoing situation has made hurdle for automakers to meet their goals and improve production. Government support is really needed to improve the auto sector. Although it seems impossible right now because of dwindling economic conditions.
Conclusion
Pakistan is the victim of most air pollution country. The production of electric vehicles is necessary for Pakistan to successfully bear climate change. At this stage where the global auto industry moved to EVs quickly, we really need to focus on it. In Pakistan two-wheelers and three-wheelers are common and cheapest traveling options. We need to put focus on it to start from the lowest level and reach to highest level like electric sedans, SUVs, crossovers, and commercial vehicles.
