There are several new assessment programs (NCAP) to rank the safety of new cars in the global auto market. We already have ASIAN NCAP, Euro NCAP, Latin NCA, and Global NACP. And currently, India is working to introduce its own car rating system which is called Bharat NCAP.

Indians Union minister for transport Nitin Gadkari has said that India will be in line with Global NCAP and Euro NCAP. The program will review the safety of new cars and give them star ratings.

Every year more than 150,000 road accidents occur in India. The Indian government committed to a 50% reduction in road accidents till 2025. India will introduce NACP to make sure safety standards in all cars.

The Indian government for all new vehicles especially carrying eight passengers made it compulsory to have at least six airbags, an automatic emergency braking system (AEBS), and three points seat belts. A deadline of October 2022 has been given to Indian automakers to meet these safety requirements.

The Global NCAP’s pass the new vehicle models through a number of crash tests to test the safety of four levels;

  • Protection of adults
  • Protection of residential children
  • Pedestrian protection
  • Safety assist system

If India obeys the same guideline as Euro, Latin, and Global NCAP, it will have the same safety reviews. Therefore India has not given any time frame for launch Bharat NCAP but sooner the new system will be here.

Many Indian car models have passed through the Global NCAP. According to the current rating, local Indian Tata and Mahindra car makers have some safety cars. Let us see the security rating of India after the launch of NCAP.
