Pakistan’s government is aiming to introduce Electric Vehicles in the country. For the reason, they have already started working on New Electric Vehicles Policy (EV) months ago this year. Primes Minister Imran Khan has also asked the concerned department to make sure that 30 % of the vehicles should be converted to EV by the end of 2030.

In the initial draft of the EV policy Ministry of Industries and Production (MoI&P)  has suggested facilitating this policy. On account of this several measures should be taken by both the provisional and federal govt. It is asked to lower the cost of EV components and raw material for local manufactures. Therefore they can produce inexpensive electric vehicles. FBR needs to play a role in an easy taxation policy. Reduced taxes and import duties will encourage cars, Rikshaw manufacturers to develop the local EV industry.

To increase and promote Electric vehicles in the country, the provisional government will provide loans to local communities. Probably there is also a program of vehicle replacement for electric vehicle owners.

Aim of the policy

Many countries around the globe have already ended the production of fossil fuel vehicles. Some countries like the Netherlands, France Uk have already planned to ban the sale of such vehicles. The basic purpose behind this policy is to control emissions in the air and to make clean and green Pakistan. The target is to make the country under the clean air Act to improve the air quality standards. Air Quality will be maintained by implanting EV credits by the financial year 2025. Three big cities of Pakistan Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi will be on the target to achieve the air quality standard.

Objectives of the policy

The main objectives of the policy are to alleviate the change in climate by lowering the transmission from vehicles. Scale down import bills by reducing the use of fuels. By clean and green Pakistan it will create employment opportunities for the people. Manufacturing of Electric vehicles will be promoted in the local industry. Electricity will be used for useful purposes. Moreover, the objective is to create links with the global auto market for the import of potential Electric Vehicles and their parts.

The target set in the policy

The long term target of the policy is to sell around 100,000 electric vehicles including cars, rickshaws, jeeps, vans, and trucks in the coming five years. According to the sources it is set to increase the sales units to 900,000 by the year 2040.

Share your thoughts on the policy in the comments section below. It will be beneficial for local auto manufacturers or not?
